JEE Advanced is an engineering entrance examination held on national level and conducted by IIT’s year on year one by one. JEE Advanced is the second phase of JEE exams. Students who qualify for JEE advanced are those who have achieved a merit to be in the top 2 lakh students of those who appeared for JEE Mains. Basis of scores obtained in JEE Advanced students are granted admissions into IITs and ISM Dhanbad. Candidates could appear for JEE Advanced twice but only in consecutive years. Every year there are only minor changes in the pattern of JEE Advanced paper and the overall pattern remains almost same. Candidates have to appear for two papers in JEE Advanced i.e. paper1 and paper2. The question paper is dived into three parts: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

There are MCQs and numerical answer type questions in the paper and candidates have to attempt both. Reasoning ability, comprehension skills and analytical power of the students are judged in the JEE Advanced paper along with theoretical knowledge.

It is important to have a better insight of the question paper to have a good preparation of the exam. Understanding the JEE Advanced paper pattern lets the candidate to get a detailed instruction about number & type of questions, exam duration, and section wise marking scheme.

It is compulsory for all the candidates to take both the papers ( Paper 1 and Paper2). Each paper consist of of three sections: Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. There is a slight change in the question paper pattern every year.

JEE Advanced Exam pattern as per previous year’s papers:

The questions asked in JEE Advanced are quite tough as well as quite tricky, one can comprehend this after going through previous year’s papers. Talking about the paper pattern, it consists of two papers viz. paper 1 and paper 2.

The Paper 1 and Paper 2 of JEE Advanced have a total of 54 questions each. The paper is further divided into three sections: Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics, each having 18 questions. The exam is of 306 marks in total and each paper carries 183 marks. The time given to solve each paper is 3 hours.

JEE Advanced Exam Pattern

The JEE Advanced Paper Pattern for 2020 will be that the exam will have two papers. JEE Advanced 2020 is schedule in 3rd week of May, 2020. The question papers will only be available in two languages – English and Hindi. At the time of applying for the exam candidates will have to choose the medium they prefer. Each paper will have three sections and exam duration of three hours: Section 1 will be Physics, Section 2 will be Chemistry, and Section 3 will be Mathematics.

Paper 1

  • Section 1 will have 10 MCQs. Each question will have four options with only one correct answer.
  • Section 2 will have 5 MCQs. Each question will have four options with one or more correct answer(s).
  • Section 3 will have 5 questions with answers in single digit integer ranging from 0 to 9.
  • Section 1 will have 8 MCQs. Each question will have four options with one or more correct answer(s).
  • Section 2 will have 8 MCQs. Each question will have four options with only one correct answer. This section will have four paragraphs with theory, practical aspects, data etc. 2 questions will be asked from each paragraph.
  • Section 3 will have Matching List type questions. Two lists will be given with matching options coded as a, b, c, and d. Students will have to choose options according to the given code.

Paper 2

  • The top sheet of the Answer booklet will be the Optical Response Sheet (ORS), which is made in a way that machines can read all answers. It will have two pages stuck together with no carbon in between.
  • Candidates will have to mark the suitable circles for each question on the front page, which will automatically be recorded in the sheet below. Therefore students must be careful that they do not change the alignment between these two sheets or try to detach them at any point of the exam.
  • Only the black ball point pen can be used for the exam. Go through the instructions carefully as candidates cannot change the answers that have already been marked.
  • Apply suitable pressure on the answer sheet. The pressure should not be too much to pierce the circles or so light that the impressions on the second sheet are not visible properly. The invigilator will give the copy of the sheet at the end of the exam which candidates can match with the JEE Advanced answer key post the exam.

There are not many changes between the JEE Main Syllabus 2020 and the JEE Advanced syllabus. JEE MAIN is based on the CBSE syllabus of Class XI and Class XII whereas JEE Advanced includes topics from a wider range of boards.
