Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur will release the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2019 results along with the merit list in third week of June, 2019. Only 18,138 candidates had qualified for admission to the premier engineering institutes, making it the lowest number of qualified students since 2012.
On June 14, 2018 on directions issued by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), close to 14,000 candidates cleared the JEE Advanced test in an extended list released by Joint Admission Board (JAB). So as per the new list, the total number of candidates qualifying in JEE Advanced is 31,980.
The extended merit list was released following an emergency meeting of the JAB on Thursday, June 14. The MHRD, taking the matter into their hand, issued directions to IIT Kanpur to release a supplementary merit list for admission before choice-filling under Joint Seat Allocation Process (JoSAA) for IITs and NITs beginning from third week of June, 2019. The new merit can be checked on the official websites jeeadv.ac.in and results.jeeadv.ac.in.
The number of candidates qualifying as per new merit list released by IIT Kanpur, organizing authority for JEE Advanced 2019, is twice the number of total seats offered in each discipline and both in general and reserved categories.
A decision to Address Reservation Concerns
The past trends reflect that the number of candidates who qualify JEE Advanced is at least twice the number of seats offered by IITs. However, 2019 JEE advanced results had only declared only 18,138 students on the merit list, which is 1.6 times of the total intake. This in turn immediately raised concerns on seats remaining vacant.
A letter issued by the MHRD states that as per the government of India policies all reservation category seats should be occupied and no seats should remain vacant after the joint seat allocation process for admissions in IITs.
To this the MHRD minister Prakash Javadekar tweeted on June 14, “Responding to requests from students and IIT community to proactively ensure that all reservation seats are duly filled, I have directed @IIT Kanpur conducting JEE advanced to make available candidates, strictly as per merit, twice the number of seats in each category”.

The sources aware of the decision expressed that such a decision would help reserved category students getting a chance at admission as new list has moved students from preparatory list to the main list of SC/ST candidates.
Effect on Cut-Offs
A senior IIT director has confirmed that only the aggregate cut-off has been lowered with subject-wise scores remaining the same. The earlier cut-off which was 35% for general category shall stand at 25% now. For Other Backward Classes (OBCs) the new cut-off shall be at 22.5% and for SC/ST candidates and persons with disabilities, it will be 12.5%. The number of female qualified candidates has increased to over 3,000 as against 2,000 declared in the first merit list.
One of the directors have shared that merit has not been compromised as the position held by candidates in previous ranks remain intact. The system rules remain as they are and at the same the authorities have been able to address the apprehensions rising among candidates on seats remaining vacant.
On the contrary many other IIT directors have expressed doubts over lowering the cut-off as this may affect the brand value of IITs before a consensus was reached to ensure that the earlier ranks would remain unaffected.
In 2018 the number of vacant seats after seven rounds of counselling was 121 out of 10,998 total seats in 23 IITs, which was higher than 96 vacant seats in 2017, 50 in 2016 and only 3 in 2015.
